VHS is not only much lower quality than even Hi-8, but it is easier to damage,
will decay's faster on the shelf (oxygen and all that) and will fail faster
due to industry cost controls reducing the quality of the shells.
From my standpoint, they are of course bulkier, must duplicate in real-time
(an hour is an hour), and the quality is poor compared to my newer digital
output of even old Hi-8 work.
The demand for Videotape is dropping faster every month while requests for
my early work in DVD format increases.
When I look at the time and cost needed to produce Videotapes of over 100
titles, it becomes obvious that tape equipment, maintainance costs, replacement
costs, space and power consumption, duplication time, cost of tape shells,
shipping and even just the storage of blank tape makes VHS more difficult
and more costly (money AND time) than DVDs. There's more, but you get the
idea.
I held off buying a DVD player for years. I finally purchased one for little
more than $100.00 the day AFTER I made my first DVD. That was in 2002. Over
three years ago.
The Bottom Line
While some of the newer vids still have a VHS following, the
vast majority of VHS purchases are of $20.00 videos. Usually one video at
a time. Not to mention the two hour videos I offer which consume even more
time and energy which is best used in producing new work and remastering my
simpler beginners projects.
I will continue to offer VHS of later titles for some time to come. However,
with certain exceptions yet to be decided, remastered older titles will be
offered only in DVD format. I shall make those decisions on a case by case
basis.
